In this episode of my writing vlog series, I dive deep into defining the protagonist of my science fiction novel—a sci-fi retelling of Swiss Family Robinson set on an alien planet. This video is all about character arc and internal conflict. I walk through the foundational questions that shape a character-driven story, including:
- The protagonist’s Enneagram type
- The Lie he believes about himself or the world
- The Truth he must learn (and how this reveals the story’s theme)
- What he wants vs. what he needs
- The ghost from his past that explains why he believes the Lie
By working through these elements, I’m building the backbone of the character’s arc—the emotional journey that will drive the plot of the novel from beginning to end. This is part of my goal to level up as a storyteller and write the most character-driven science fiction book I’ve ever written.
