Today, I’m sharing some books to read if you love Star Trek.

If you’re a Star Trek fan like me, you likely have a fascination with the unknown – the exploration of what’s out there in deep space. You connect with the mission of the Starship Enterprise to “boldly go”.

Maybe you’re looking for something in your reading to scratch that same space exploration itch. A story about a brave crew on a spaceship heading out into the unknown and discovering strange new worlds.

If this is you then you’re in the right place. I would like to present you with 10 science fiction books to read if you love Star Trek (in no particular order).

Ghosts of The Future by Ben Avery

Ghosts of The FutureGhosts of The Future by Ben Avery is the thrilling story of a working-class crew on the Starship Tabitha. A strange anomaly lures them off course to am impossible planetoid. There, they’ll discover temporal anomalies, a derelict Starship with a tragic history, and alien structures with a baffling origin.

Space Colony One by J.J. Green

Space Colony One  follows a community of settlers establishing the first human colony on an alien world.  But this new paradise is not all they hoped. Dangerous predators lurk, and human tensions threaten to tear the community apart.

The space exploration in this series is mostly confined to one planet, but it will definately satisfy. There is a lot of learn about this planet and its inhabitants. You’ll find some Star Trek-style diplomacy in these pages, some very unique aliens, and a fascinatingly unique class structure brimming with conflict. It’s also filled with thrilling action.

Edge of Oblivion by Joshua A. Johnston

Edge of Oblivion by Joshua A. JohnstonEdge of Oblivion is set in a confederacy of intelligent species not unlike The United Federation of Planets. The peace is threatened when a mysterious alien object of unknown origins attacks (It reminds me of Unicron from Transformers: The Movie). Rather than join the battle, Jared Carter is given command of a starship, with a crew of different alien races, and tasked with a mission to pursue an unlikely lead: a collection of ancient alien religious fragments which might hold the answers to defeating the threat.

This one scratched all the Star Trek itches for me. It wasn’t just exploration for exploration’s sake. Finding these answers is a matter of survival.

Ringworld by Larry Niven

Ringworld by Larry NivenRingworld is certainly a strange new world . When a circular ribbon of matter six hundred million miles long and ninety million miles in radius is found around a planet, a multi-species crew is sent to investigate it. But after they crash, they are forced to make a long trek across the Ringworld.

Not only do we get to know the aliens among our main characters, we also get to explore this unique world, and the beings that live on it. This classic Hugo winner is the perfect go-to if you were fascinated by the Dyson Sphere in the TNG episode “Relics”.

Citadel: First Colony by Kevin Tumlinson

Citadel First Colony by Kevin TumlinsonCitadel: First Colony is another colonisation story, but the ship suffers a catastrophe on arrival. It’s a desperate escape for the survivors to make it down to the planet surface. Once there, they have to try to build a life without many of the resources they’d expected. But this planet offers strange mysteries. The Colony is led by Captain Soma – the only alien among the colonists. He must deal with the prejudice and disgruntlement if he’s to win the respect of the people.

Lots of other great character arcs make this another great story of both survival and exploration of a strange new world.

Diverse Similarity by Sharon Rose

Diverse Similarity by Sharon RoseThe protagonist of Diverse Similarity is the only human in a multi-racial starship crew. Unlike most of her species – she is a telepath – which should be impossible. The ship’s mission is primarily scienctific in nature, which immediately gives the Star Trek flavour. The book delves deeply into the culture and differences between various alien races and explores new ideas of what it means to be human.

There is plenty of excitement as our hero is captured by hostile aliens, but the book takes the time to explore some deeper philosophical themes and ideas.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Project Hail Mary by Andy WeirYou’ve probably heard of Project Hail Mary but if you haven’t, you’re in for a treat. This one is on the harder side of sci-fi but it’s a fantastic first contact story. A single astronaut is sent on a dangerous and vital mission. A mission he doesn’t remember. But we won’t have to do it alone.

Some fascinating worldbuilding exploring alien biology and culture. There are mysteries to be solved and some beautiful character work.

Talman Prime by J.J. Green

Talman Prime by J.J. Green

Version 1.0.0

Talman Prime is another space colonisation storry by J.J. Green, but this one and Space Colony One are very different. This book finds it’s heroes arriving at a planet to find it’s not at all what they expected. Our protagonist is part of a team sent down to explore the planet. They’ll soon discover it’s not as empty as they thought it was.

This story explores some hard questions about morality and loyalty, and the series will prove to have quite a Star Trek feel as it will continue to follow characters as they explore other parts of the galaxy.
